今回、ニコラス・テイラーの写真展「Dubbed High Priest」を7月にIIIS aka Il SOLITO(恵比寿)、８月にDIGINNER Gallery(自由が丘)にて開催いたします。
２ヶ月に渡り、会場を移しながら、展示内容も変え、展示いたします。
80年代、彼は、ジャン＝ミッシャル・バスキア、マイケル・ホルマンに誘われてGRAYというバンドに
誘われ活動いたしました。その後、バスキアは現代アートの世界だけではなく、様々な人に愛される作品を生み出し、
没後、現在もなお影響を与えている作家ですが、そんなバスキアのプライベートな写真を撮っていたのがニコラス・テイラーです。
またニコラスはDJ High Priest名義でその後、アメリカの白人で最初にスクラッチをしたHipHopのDJと言われており、
故ラメルジーも在籍していたデス・コメット・クルーでの活動など「生きる伝説」と今も呼ばれているアーティストです。
当時Grayを解散したときに、それまで学んでいたカメラを音楽に専念するためにやめたというニコラスの写真は、
当時まだ知る由もなかった、その数年後に他界してしまうバスキアという作家の貴重なドキュメントであり、
またNYシーンのドキュメントの１つであると思います。

これまでにどのくらいのバンドが世界中で結成されたであろうか。
ある者達は、スターダムへ駆け上がり、ある者達は、ひっそりとその活動に幕を閉じる。
GrayというNYで結成されたバンド。彼らは82年辺りにバンドの活動休止後、重要な役割を担うことになる。
被写体である、ジャン＝ミッシェル・バスキアのドローイングは現代美術の大きなターニング・ポイントの一旦を
担った。そしてそのバスキアと歌手であるマドンナを繋げた重要人物であるのが、Nicholas Taylorである。
彼はGrayの活動休止後のDJとして伝説的なアーティストの一人でもあるラメルジーなどと活動を共にするが、
音楽的活動に専念する為に、それまでに学んできたカメラを封印す。
ここに写されているのは、まぎれもないドキュメントであり、”あの時のNY”を記録した。
ここに写されているいるのは社会に生きる” 我々 ”である。

MESSAGE from Nicholas Taylor
The artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was a living creative phenomenon who would pass through my life and become a very good friend.
I am grateful for the wonderful times we shared together. His intelligence was beyond genius and every moment with Jean was precious.
He told me an idea. He wanted to be the most respected artist in the world during his lifetime.
But the pressure of becoming the most acclaimed artist weighed heavy in his conscious.
The innocence in his heart conflicted with his growing fame.
He would self destruct with intoxicants, which gave him energy to paint and also helped him escape from the cruel world.
We talked about death and the afterlife, and he told me he would be reincarnated.
